Research groups at IBA FM MU Analysis of Environmental Data

Leader of the research group Leader of the research group: Jiří Kalina, M.Sc.

A joint research team of the Analysis of Environmental Data of the Institute of Biostatistics and Analyses at the Faculty of Medicine of the Masaryk University (IBA FM MU) and the Research Centre for Toxic Compounds in the Environment (RECETOX) at the Masaryk University focuses on the collection, processing and evaluation of data describing the environmental quality, particularly the pollution of various environmental matrices by persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

The focus of activity of this research team involves data analyses regarding the contents of pollutants in the air, water, breast milk, human blood, and other environmental matrices. In particular, these are analyses of background concentrations of pollutants, of spatial distributions, and of medium-term and long-term time series of pollution, including the calculation of trend characteristics, and predictions of future developments. The analyses involve visualisations, determination of uncertainties, comparison of different methods for the monitoring of environmental matrices, and processing of mutual calibration studies in terms of trends (sampling of different time granularities, irregular sampling, seasonality, distant values, etc.).

Research activities of this group also involve the development and maintenance of a repository of research data on the environment (Genasis) and a collection and visualisation system for data of the Global Monitoring Plan (GMP) of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. These tools make it possible for both professionals and the lay public to carry out a wide spectrum of analyses of data on persistent pollutants on both global and local level.

Apart from that, the group also deals with less extensive analyses of data from other environmental areas (such as the contamination of environment).

List of projects

  • GENASIS (Global ENvironmental ASsessment Information System) provides a comprehensive information on contamination of the environment by chemicals, namely persistent organic pollutans (POPs). You can find more information at www.genasis.cz.
  • Global Monitoring Plan on Persistent Organic Pollutants (GMP). Data warehouse intended for the purpose of the global monitoring plan for POPs has been developed in accordance with conclusions of meeting by leading experts in the field and members of regional groups, which took place in Brno (Czech Republic) in June 2012, and in Geneva (Switzerland) in October 2012. The GMP data warehouse aims to collect and to archive data, to compile it and to archive the outcomes, including supplementary data which might be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the Stockholm Convention. You can find more information at www.pops-gmp.org.
