Grant projects Information technology in biomedical engineering

Coordinator Coordinator: Dušek Ladislav

Duration Duration: 2009–2012

This four-year project supported a team of 18 best PhD students in biomedical applications of computers science at Brno University of Technology (BUT) and Masaryk University (MU).

The project consisted in the establishment of a team of PhD students, their cooperation in solving issues concerning the application of modern IT methods in biology and medicine, and achievement of specific goals such as building new application of IT in these fields.

In particular, the following tasks were solved: biometrics for security applications and identification of living organisms, analysis of electrical activity of organs, preferably of heart and brain, genomic signal processing, application and development of IT methods for the assessment of ecological and health risks, IT solution of health information systems, development of analytical tools for clinical data and research of methods for stochastic modelilng in predictive medicine. Supervisors and PhD students of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication of BUT, the Department of Intelligent Systems at the Faculty of Information Technology of BUT, and the Institute of Biostatistics and Analyses of MU participated in the project. All involved institutions established a close cooperation during the project.

The project included information exchange, coordination involvement in 2 major R&D projects, funding travels, and a scholarship supplement. The stimulated research of the team is documented by many publications, most notably 11 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
