List of all projects Ensuring information support and quality assessment of cancer screening programmes in the Czech Republic

Coordinator Coordinator: Májek Ondřej

Duration Duration: 2013–2013

Cancer screening programmes can contribute significantly to decreasing the population burden of cancer. However, such programmes are only effective if they are properly organised. The aim of the project was to maintain and to develop further the system for data collection and for quality control of cancer screening programmes.

Project objectives in more detail:

  • Collection of data on the breast cancer screening programme
    • running and modernisation of the central database of breast cancer screening
    • centralisation of data from individual healthcare facilities accredited to perform breast cancer screening
    • validation of centralised data, distribution of validation reports
    • administration of data collection
  • Collection of data on the colorectal cancer screening programme
    • running the central database of colorectal cancer screening
    • maintenance and further development of electronic forms for the collection of data on the introduction of an automated system for quality control
    • administration of data collection
  • Collection of data on the cervical cancer screening programme
    • running the central database of cervical cancer screening
    • centralisation of data from individual healthcare facilities accredited to perform cervical cancer screening
    • introduction of an automated system for quality control
    • validation of centralised data, distribution of validation reports
    • administration of data collection
  • Providing technical support to users of screening programmes databases
  • Statistical evaluation of data from the breast cancer screening programme in order to assess the indicators of performance, quality and cost-effectiveness of the programme, as well as performance indicators of individual healthcare facilities participating in the programme
  • Statistical evaluation of data from the colorectal cancer screening programme in order to assess the indicators of performance, quality and cost-effectiveness of the programme, as well as performance indicators of individual healthcare facilities participating in the programme; optimisation of availability of the network of colonoscopy centres; and information agenda related to a necessary change of the type of faecal occult blood tests (FOBTs)
  • Statistical evaluation of data from the cervical cancer screening programme in order to assess the indicators of performance, quality and cost-effectiveness of the programme, as well as performance indicators of individual healthcare facilities participating in the programme
  • Providing information on the programmes to both the general public and professionals by means of the web portals www.mamo.cz, www.kolorektum.cz, www.cervix.cz.
  • Performing audit on newly available population-based epidemiological data in order to provide background information for breast, colorectal and cervical cancer screening programmes, focusing particularly on the assessment of trends in population coverage by prevention programmes and on the evaluation of weak points in the organisation of these programmes
  • Information support for the project of personalised invitations to screening examinations
  • Development of methodology for the information support of screening programmes, including the publication of results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed journals
  • Maintenance of both hardware and software background for systems of information support for cancer screening programmes, including safety measures applied to relevant data
  • Data collection, validation, analysis, management and administration
  • Full cooperation with Committees established by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic to organise individual screening programmes
  • Full information service for the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic, including reports on cancer screening performance in the Czech Republic for international studies and surveys (OECD, WHO, EU etc.)

All of the above-mentioned objectives were met, many project outputs are still publicly available and regularly updated. The Institute of Biostatistics and Analyses of the Masaryk University cooperated with relevant expert medical societies, which guarantee the quality of cancer screening programmes in the Czech Republic, and prepared a set of regularly updated web portals for the communication with both the general public and professionals: www.mamo.cz [1], www.kolorektum.cz [2] a www.cervix.cz [3]. Towards the end of 2013, an extensive publication was published, providing an information manual for the evaluation of screening programmes according to the latest international standards as well as the latest results of individual screening programmes [4].

  • Funding: The project was supported by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic within the programme “National Action Plans and Policies for the Year 2013”. The project is registered with the identifier 20/13/A.
