Publication activities of IBA MU in 2012

Important outputs of IBA MU research involve publications, most notably original articles in international and national journals.

In 2012, IBA MU researchers participated in the publication of 66 articles in international journals, confirming the long-term trend of an increasing number of publications per year (57 articles were published in international journals in 2011). Other important outputs of publication activities involve IBA MU involvement in the publication of dozens of articles in national journals, several books, software products and articles in proceedings from important international conferences.

Table: Overview of publication activities of IBA MU in 2012.

Type of publication
Number of publications
Articles in international journals 66
Articles in Czech journals 47
Books and monographs 2
Chapters in books 6
Articles in proceedings from international conferences 9
Authorized original software 5

A large part of published articles presents the results of original research which has been carried out by expert analysts at IBA MU. IBA MU specializes in and focuses on the analysis and interpretation of biological and clinical data, the application of statistical methods in biology and medicine, biostatistics, predictive oncology and epidemiology. The most significant articles published in 2012 involve the survival analysis of colorectal cancer patients in Germany which was performed by Dr Ondrej Majek and a team of German co-authors and published in the British Journal of Cancer [1]; another example is the prediction of numbers of cancer patients in the Czech Republic in 2015 based on data from the Czech National Cancer Registry, published by Dr Tomas Pavlik and his team in the BMC Public Health [2].

Each year, many publications result from the cooperation between IBA MU and renowned hospitals and research institutes (e.g., University Hospital Brno, Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute, numerous departments of Faculty of Medicine at the Masaryk University, CEITEC). IBA MU has continuously developed a long-term cooperation with Czech and foreign partners in the areas of oncology and cancer prevention. In this respect, the most significant output in 2012 was an original article on treatment of gastrointestinal tumours published in the Lancet Oncology journal (IF = 22.587) [3], which was co-authored by Petr Brabec, MSc. Research databases containing clinical data – which are run and analyzed by IBA MU for its partners – provide a solid background for numerous research outputs. For example, 4 articles based on data from the RENIS registry of kidney cancer were published in international journals [4-7], and many publications resulted from the cooperation between IBA MU and the Department of Cardiology at University Hospital Brno (e.g., 8-9).

Apart from the above-mentioned activities, IBA MU deals with the development of software applications aimed at the visualization and interpretation of large volumes of medical and environmental data. One example is a sophisticated software for spatial modelling of pesticide concentrations and pools [10] or a special software utilizable in clinical practice for the diagnosis of selected neuropsychiatric diseases based on data from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) [11].

IBA MU initiated the cooperation among Czech and Slovak medical faculties in 2006 and has continuously pursued to deepen it since then. Nowadays, medical faculties from all over the Czech Republic and Slovakia cooperate within the MEFANET (MEdical FAculties NETwork) project; more information about the project is available at http://www.mefanet.cz. In 2012, the MEFANET project was introduced to the international community in an article published in Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences [12].

In 2012, IBA MU participated in the publication of two books (in Czech language) intended primarily for health care professionals:

  • Dušek, L. et al.: Epidemiologie, prevence a léčba kolorektálního karcinomu dle dostupných českých a mezinárodních dat [13] – IBA MU researchers wrote the overwhelming majority of this book dealing with colorectal cancer epidemiology, prevention and treatment. Czech and international data on colorectal cancer were thoroughly analyzed, compared and commented. The book can be freely downloaded from http://www.rektum.cz/index.php?pg=informace--nadory-rekta-edukacni-materialy--publikace.
  • Skřičková, J. et al.: Základy moderní pneumoonkologie [14] – current knowledge and recent developments in pulmonary oncology. IBA MU researchers wrote two chapters on epidemiology of malignant tumours of respiratory system.

A comprehensive overview of IBA MU publications is available in the Research and projects section.
