IBA MU has become a member of the Organization of European Cancer Institutes

On 15 May 2013, the Institute of Biostatistics and Analyses of the Masaryk University (IBA MU) became the associate member of the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI), a recognized European network of cancer centres. IBA MU is currently the only non-medical institute in a community of cutting-edge European healthcare facilities dealing with cancer research and treatment.

The OECI is a non-government, non-profit organization founded in Vienna in 1979. Its primary objectives involve the coordination of cancer research, support of related activities, transfer of knowledge to clinical practice, and the communication of leading cancer research centres and experts on the European level.

OECI membership is the completion of IBA MU’s long-term activities in the field of assessment of cancer care and prevention. Its position was all the more difficult with regard to the fact that IBA MU does not actually provide cancer care but provides background information, technologies, and analyses. Nevertheless, it is essential to mention the long-term cooperation with the Czech Society for Oncology, cancer centres and other organizations, dozens of successful research projects, the provision of background information for all three Czech cancer screening programmes, assessment and prediction of cancer epidemiology and cancer care from the hospital level to population-based assessments, and the organization of European conferences focusing on cancer prevention.

OECI membership is next in a row of IBA MU’s significant international activities. To mention just the most important ones, IBA MU has been the co-organizer of two successful ECCD conferences (European Colorectal Cancer Days), provider of a comprehensive IT solution for data collection and visualization within the frame of the Global Monitoring Plan of the Stockholm Convention on POPs, or coordinator of technology development in the international network of medical faculties MEFANET.

OECI membership paves the way for IBA MU to participate in really important international projects that have a real chance to contribute significantly to the improvement of cancer care and, in a long-term prospect, to decrease cancer mortality in the European Union.
